But that ninety seconds? That was the exact moment you unknowingly signed your life away to become the unpaid, on-call tech support department for every human being you've ever met.

The Ripple Effect of Digital Competence

Word travels fast in family circles. Faster than you'd think, actually. By Tuesday, your mom was calling because "the internet is broken." By Thursday, your aunt needed help with something called "the cloud" (which she pronounced like it was a foreign language). By the weekend, you were getting texts from your high school friend's mother about why her iPad "isn't iPadding correctly."

Suddenly, everyone you know has developed a supernatural ability to detect your presence within a fifty-mile radius of any malfunctioning electronic device. It's like you emit some kind of tech-savvy pheromone that draws confused relatives and friends like moths to a blue screen of death.

The Jargon Jungle You Didn't Sign Up For

Here's the thing nobody tells you about becoming everyone's unofficial IT person: you'll spend approximately 73% of your time pretending to understand what people are talking about.

"My computer is making that noise again," they'll say, as if you possess some sort of mystical ability to diagnose hardware issues through interpretive sound descriptions over the phone.

"Which noise?" you'll ask, knowing full well this conversation is about to spiral into a twenty-minute game of technological charades where someone tries to phonetically spell out the sound their printer makes when it's "being difficult."

You'll find yourself saying things like "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" with the confidence of someone who definitely knows what they're talking about, while secretly Googling "why won't Samsung TV connect to Netflix" on your phone.

The Guilt Complex of Digital Literacy

The worst part isn't even the constant interruptions or the pretending to know about router configurations. It's the guilt. The crushing, inescapable guilt that comes with being marginally more tech-savvy than the people around you.

Because here's the truth: you're not actually that good with technology. You're just better at reading error messages and clicking "Allow" when something asks for permission. You've never taken a computer science class, and your idea of advanced troubleshooting is clearing the browser cache and hoping for the best.

The syndrome reaches its peak when you start giving advice about things you've never personally experienced, like "Yeah, you should definitely upgrade your RAM" to someone whose computer problems you've diagnosed entirely through text messages.

The Haunted Look of Recognition

Eventually, you develop The Look. Other unofficial IT people recognize it immediately—that thousand-yard stare that appears whenever someone starts a sentence with "Since you're good with computers..."

It's the look of someone who has spent their lunch break on a FaceTime call trying to explain what a browser is to someone who keeps calling it "the Google." It's the expression of a person who has learned to fear the phrase "it was working fine yesterday" more than any horror movie villain.

You'll spot others with The Look in coffee shops, quietly weeping into their laptops while someone on speakerphone describes how their printer is "making angry noises" at them.

The Inescapable Digital Destiny

The truth is, there's no going back. Once you've been crowned the family tech guru, that crown is permanently welded to your head. You can try to deflect, you can pretend your phone is dead, you can even move to a different state—but somehow, some way, someone will track you down because their tablet "isn't tableting properly."

Because in a world where everyone has seventeen different devices but nobody knows how any of them actually work, being the person who can successfully install an app update makes you basically a wizard.

And wizards, as we all know, never really get to retire.
